The concept of family is the main component of society and social structure. Family is defined as a social gathering which is necessary for society as well as an individual.in this world, every single person is a part of a family. In the theme of humanism, family refers to a group of individuals who are associated with brotherhood connections, empathy and live with each other. The entire life of a person turned around with family. Family is an ever-changing concept of society that converts and comes up with various new concepts and blows out the traditional ones from time to time. Nowadays, many individuals live as single, without family but must belong to a certain friend circle or relatives. Though they do not maintain the traditional theories of family, the concept needs to be improved and changed and become acceptable by other individuals over time and that is the benefit of society. The main two factors which are able to control the growth of a family are marriage and birth. Society includes a number of families which grow with a number of individuals. These are related and dependent on each other. A family member grows and develops with the help of another family member who provides a number of essentials for growing up such as education, manners, cultures, values etc. This essay provides a brief knowledge about how family and society related to each other, types of families and the significance and functions of families in society.
Main Body
Family is a wide subject with various statements like some sociologists stated this as a main and essential establishment of modern society; “backbone of society”.
Conjugal or nuclear family refers to a small family in which a husband, a wife have a single child. Modern society belongs with this type of family but in future, this nuclear family system may help to develop as a joint family after the marriage of child/children and if they have the interest to stay together (Hank and Steinbach, 2018).
Consanguine or joint family means parents live with their children as well as with other relatives. The word consanguinity means blood kinship; the trait of being plummeted as another individual from the same ancestor.
A Matrilocal family is referred to as a family which includes a mother and children, her biological offspring though there is an option for adoption. In modern society, this culture is acceptable because most women are now self-dependent and have the ability to give proper parental care to their children (Degner 2020).
The patrilocal family is totally opposite to the matrilocal one. This consists of husband and child where the husband or father is dominative, focusing and managing the family needs while the wife or mother looks after the children.
The Oedipal family is a model of a triangular family. This consists of a husband, a wife and a child but they live isolated. In western societies, this family culture is widely accepted and known as the patriarchal arrangement of the family (James 2018).
A family is a group of individuals who are related to each other by blood, marriage and customs. It is a universal social unit hence its concept is global. Family is necessary for every single person as they perform many essential functions (economical, biological, psychological, social etc.) which is a vital need for the existence of a society as well as for an individual (Phoenix 2019).
Family is based on an emotional basis as every member of a family is emotionally connected with each other which provide cares, protections, affections and always everyone is by everyone’s side in both bad days and good days. Family helps a person to grow and make them able to deal with the outer world.
The main function of a family is to conserve and maintain society with the help of reproduction (biologically) and socialization (socially). An individual gains and learns his/her fundamental knowledge about the balancing and regulation of sexual behavior, various norms, rules from family. Reproduction is one of the vital functions of the family which gives rise to new generations and can control the population (Weems et al, 2020). Without reproduction, a family, as well as a society, must disappear. Family helps to maintain economic balance in a social environment. Families come up with fulfilling various needs such as education, mental and emotional support which help to understand the outside world.
Types and variations of family culture, characteristics of family and its functions have a great impact on society as these cultures help to grow and improve society, social organizations are strengthened by these and the main factor, family culture can control the population (Goodrich 2017).
Conclusion
Generally, family and society are closely related with each other as a family is the key ingredient of a society and the society is to be composed of a number of families. Various types of persons with different backgrounds, religions, casts, economical status live in a society and do various kinds of jobs. So actions are taken to be needed regarding the increase and strengthen their positions to maintain their health as well as happiness. For the sake of social development, families should be built up and nourish carefully. In the case of nuclear or matrilocal families, though they have the potential to maintain their family, they have to be dependent on society or other members. It is necessary to make a good relationship between society and family for their sake and wellbeing.
